About Bakemens

Flour, heat, patience

Last updated August 13, 2026

Bakemens is an independent publication about bread and everything next to it. It exists because the useful version of this subject is usually the one nobody has time to write.

Everything we publish tries to be methodical, encouraging, precise about temperature, which mostly means saying what we actually think and showing the reasoning.

What we cover

The site is organised into 6 sections:

  • Bread — Dough, fermentation, shaping and the loaf you can repeat on a Tuesday.
  • Cakes & Sponges — Crumb, rise and the mixing methods that decide both.
  • Pastry — Laminating, shortcrust, choux and keeping butter where it belongs.
  • Baking Science — Gluten, leavening, sugar and heat — why the recipe says what it says.
  • Tins & Tools — Ovens, scales, tins and the small number of things worth owning.
  • When It Goes Wrong — Dense crumb, sunken middles, leaking butter — diagnosis before the next attempt.

Who writes it

Every article carries a named writer with a profile page, and nothing is published anonymously. You can see the full list on our writers page.

How it is funded

Advertising pays for this site. It does not buy coverage, placement or a favourable word, and our editorial policy sets out exactly how that separation works.

Who publishes it

Bakemens is published by Slow Rise Editorial, a sole proprietorship of Ananya Das.
